Brief 3 : Native Haze - Change of plan

Native Haze drops out of shoot

Unfortunately this brief has really struggled this year as the women who runs the online store, Native Haze had to drop out of the photo shoot.

Me and Jessie Leong, a photography student, really want to collaborate in an ambitious art directed shoot, therefore we were determined to use our research and our initial idea of shooting at Bolton Abbey and have put together a new project with fashion design student Lizzi Knight.

Brief 3 : Native Haze will now take the new form of Wabi-Sabi, a new concept put together by Lizzi Knight for her recent collection.

Rewriting the brief

I have put together a rough outline of the new brief which I presented to Jessie and Lizzi so they too can add something to the brief if they wish.

Context

Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese concept of finding beauty in the death or decay of things, which can be applied to the harsh landscape of Yorkshire. From the more obvious references, such as a weathered ruin, to the bare branches of a tree, to the presence of fungi swamping the landscape. There is a certain beauty drawn from these surroundings, which accepts this kind of beauty in the detail and the minutiae.

Wabi-Sabi definition: The beauty and appreciation of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is the beauty of things humble and simple in nature. It is the beauty of things unrefined and unconventional.

Brief

Collaboratively art direct an ambitious photo shoot with photographer Jessie Leong and fashion designer Lizzi Knight that explores the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi. The shoot will be located at Bolton Abbey, a renowned beauty spot in Yorkshire.

The main aim of the shoot is to capture a new collection from fashion designer Lizzi Knight. Concepts of Wabi-Sabi should run across different channels ranging from hair and make up to the appliance of the photography in print ephemera.

Research

Photography references e.g. Photographer Nicole Heiniger that features Thairine Garcia in ‘Red Obsession’ in issue 1 of Trailer Brasil.

Look at colour e.g. the colour red could be examined to reference blood – present in life and death.

Hair and make up styling e.g. Big wild hair references uncontrollable beauty.

Appliance: Print ephemera
